ACTOR bios


ROBERT BREULER* (David Greenglass) Robert Breuler has performed in Tina Landau’s last two productions at his home theatre, Steppenwolf: The Diary Of Anne Frank and The Cherry Orchard. He has been in over 30 shows in the last 20 years as an ensemble member at Steppenwolf. Among his favorites: Pa Joad in The Grapes Of Wrath, Andrei Botvinnik in A Walk In The Woods, Father Lux in Our Lady Of 121ST Street, and The Armenian in Time Of Your Life. He has appeared in shows at the Goodman, European Rep, and the Northlight here in Chicago. On Broadway: Grapes Of Wrath, The Song Of Jacob Zulu with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Carousel at Lincoln Center with fellow ensemble member Sally Murphy, and as Uncle Ben in Death Of A Salesman at the Eugene O’Neill directed by Bob Falls. He played Joe Keller in All My Sons at the Dallas Theatre Center, H. H. Hobson in Hobson’s Choice at the Playmaker’s Theatre at the University of North Carolina, and Les Moss in The Infidel Directed By Anna Shapiro at the Philadelphia Theatre Company. FILMS: Robert has worked with John Hancock in two films: A Piece Of Eden and Suspended Animation. Other films include The Small Assassin, The Crucible, Love And Action In Chicago, Miles From Home, Shimmer, Trial By Jury, Painted Heart and Purple Haze.

TV: Prison Break, Early Edition, The Untouchables, NYPD-BLUE, Father Clement’s Story and The Hollow Boy.

Mr. Breuler has been a proud member of Actor’s Equity for 36 years. He is the recipient of a Fox Foundation grant for 1999. The Jeff committee has named him Best Actor In A Drama. He has been married for twenty-one years to the actress and cabaret singer, Suzanne Petri whose latest CD; DAS GRAND TOUR has just been released.

BILL BANNON* (Sam Roberts) Bill has been an actor in the Chicago theatre community for over twenty years, and has performed on the stages of Chicago Shakespeare, Goodman, Court, Steppenwolf, TimeLine, Eclipse, Strawdog and Pegasus Players theatres, among many others. He has most recently worked for Chicago Shakespeare Theatre on their Chicago and New York productions of Marionette Macbeth, having previously performed in their productions of Much Ado About Nothing, A Flea In Her Ear, and Hamlet. Other productions of note: Strawdog Theatre and Theatre on the Lake – Three Sisters (After Dark Award - Best Ensemble), TimeLine Theatre ─ This Happy Breed (Jeff Citations - Best Ensemble & Best Production), Hauptmann (Jeff Citation - Best Production), Stage Left ─ Leander Stillwell (Jeff Citation - Best Ensemble), Eclipse Theatre at Victory Gardens ─ Brutality of Fact, Rumors, Lost In Yonkers (Jeff Citation nomination - Best Supporting Actor). Regional credits include Last of the Red Hot Lovers at the Krannert Center/U of I. Bill will next be seen in Shattered Globe Theatre’s production of Requiem for a Heavyweight.




KEVIN D’AMBROSIO (Gelb, Fuchs, Rogge) Kevin is thrilled to be part of Hancock Productions staging of The Brother. He was last seen as Louis in Photo Op (Artistic Home One Act Festival). Other credits include Hobotov in Ward 6 (Mom and Dad Prod.) Special thanks to WK, CG, and LG.







CHARLIE JENSEN (Feklisov, Bloch) is thrilled to be doing this play. He really hates people who say that, but he really is. LEE KANNE (Harry Gold, others) Since training with William Esper of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, Lee has appeared on numerous Chicago stages since the 1970's, namely Wisdom Bridge, Organic, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theatre, City Lit and Mary-Arrchie, among others. He last appeared in the Jeff Recommended Saved at Mary-Arrchie Theatre.










DEBRA RODKIN (Tessie, Bungalow owner) was last seen for FilmAcres as Ann Kriza in Bohemian Nights. Debra is an ensemble member with AWT, most recently seen in their acclaimed production of Equus (Dora). She has appeared at many area theatres including Victory Gardens, National Jewish, Apple Tree, Eclipse, Ivanhoe Theatre and Stage Left, of which she was a founding ensemble member, playing roles ranging from The Nurse in Romeo & Juliet to Buffy in cult-fav Cannibal Cheerleaders on Crack. You can see and hear her in numerous commercials, industrial films and independent feature films.





JUSTINE SERINO (Ethel Rosenberg) was last seen as Niobe in The Love of the Nightingale with LiveWire Chicago Theatre. Other credits include work with Chicago Jewish Theatre, Silk Road Theatre Project, Stage Left, Aspect Theatre Company, The Shakespeare Project of Chicago, Footsteps Theatre Company, Circle Theatre, The Mercury Theatre and the Artistic Home, where she is a long-time student. She would like to thank her extraordinary family for the enduring gift of roots and wings.






WILL SHANKLIN (Roy Cohn, Spillane, others) previously appeared in such plays as Angels in America, All My Sons, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, King Lear, Noises Off, Dog Opera, and Lady Windermere’s Fan. He will be seen in two short films, The Ghost of Captain Lowe and Sweet Treatment. Will received a BFA from West Virginia University and an MFA from U.C. Irvine.






BRAD SMITH (Frutkin, Rabbi, Meeropol) Brad Smith is a Chicagoland native who graduated from the Theatre School at DePaul University with a BFA in acting. Recently, he appeared in the world premiere of Fear of a Hood at Live Bait Theatre. He has also been seen this past year in Trueblinka by Adam Rapp with Collaboraction, as well as their week of Susan Lori-Parks' 365 Plays/365 Days at Open End Gallery. Film credits include The Ice Harvest, Let's go to Prison, and Stranger Than Fiction. He is delighted to be working with this fine group of artists.





ANTHONY TOURNIS (Julius Rosenberg) Anthony is overjoyed to be working on The Brother! He has recently been seen as Charlie Chaplin in The Sounds of Silents, John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Mancow in Siskel and Ebert Save Chicago, and is a proud member of The Factory Theater. Love to family, friends, and Stacie.










SHAWNA TUCKER (Matron, protest woman) recently moved to Chicago. In the Atlanta area she appeared with The Horizon Theatre, Theater in the Square, Essential Theater, Neighborhood Playhouse, Alliance Theatre, Gainesville Theater Alliance, Art Within, Onstage Atlanta, OffShoot Productions and Theatre Gael. She also appeared on stages in St. Louis and Washington D.C., and trained in Chicago at the St. Nicholas Theatre School.





ALISON WEISS (Ruth Greenglass) Alison Weiss is a native of New York City and has been acting, writing and improvising in Chicago for four years. She has performed for BackStage Theatre Company, Second City Unhinged, I.O., pH Productions, The Playground, Emerald City Theater Company, Corn Productions and the NYC Fringe Festival. JOSH ZAGOREN (Agent Lewis, Judge Kaufman) Josh Zagoren hails from Iowa. He moved to Chicago upon completion of his studies at Emerson College in Boston and has since worked as a writer/performer/puppeteer with Second City, I/O and The CORNservatory. He founded the highly successful, Metromix recommended, production company “Hobo Junction” that continues to defy the elements and perform to sold-out crowds around the city, or ends up getting thrown out of bars. He is delighted to be involved in such a prodigious production. He also likes Chinese food

DIRECTOR and BOOK AUTHOR bios


JOHN HANCOCK (Playwright/Director/Producer) attended Morton High School in Cicero, graduated from Harvard College, and studied theater in Europe on a grant from Harvard, mainly at the Berliner Ensemble in East Berlin. When he was twenty-two, he directed an Off-Broadway hit, Brecht’s A Man’s A Man. He was nominated for an Academy Award, won an Obie, the Brandeis Citation, first prize at Karlovy Vary and numerous other awards. He was Artistic Director of the San Francisco Actors Workshop, the Pittsburgh Playhouse, and the New Repertory Theatre in NYC. He worked extensively Off-Broadway at the American Place Theatre, Circle in the Square, and elsewhere. Film accomplishments include directing Bang The Drum Slowly with Robert DeNiro, Weeds with Nick Nolte (Hancock co-wrote as well), Prancer with Sam Elliott, Let’s Scare Jessica To Death (co-wrote), California Dreaming, Baby Blue Marine with Richard Gere, Suspended Animation, Steal The Sky with Mariel Hemingway and Ben Cross, and A Piece Of Eden with Chicago actors Robert Breuler and Marc Grapey. He is happy to be back in Chicago directing theatre.


Sam Roberts (Author) Sam Roberts became urban affairs correspondent of The New York Times in 2005. Previously he served as deputy editor of the Week In Review, urban affairs columnist (inaugurating the column “Metro Matters”), deputy metropolitan editor, and a metropolitan reporter. He also served as conventions editor, in charge of the special editions previewing the Democratic and Republican national conventions in 2004. Prior to joining The Times in 1983, he spent 15 years at the Daily News as reporter, city editor, and political editor. He authored The Brother, Who We Are Now: The Changing Face of America in the 21st Century; Who We Are -- a Portrait of America, and co-author of a biography of Nelson Rockefeller. He has been the host of New York Close-up, a nightly news and interview program on New York 1. He also produces a weekly podcast called “Only in New York.” Mr. Roberts has won awards from the Newspaper Guild of New York, received the Peter Kihss Award from the Fund for the City of New York and the Society of Silurians. The Brother was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction. His magazine articles have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, the New Republic, New York, and Empire State Report. Mr. Roberts received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1968. He lives in New York with his wife and two sons.

SHAWNA TUCKER (Co-Producer) began producing by helping to create a theater wing of the Lafayette Arts Council in St. Louis. There she produced Shakespeare in Lafayette Park, Moliere’s The Miser, and Horton Foote’s Courtship in Lafayette Park. In Decatur, Georgia she produced Taming of the Shrew with The Neighborhood Playhouse. In Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with The Tiny Alice Traveling Theatre, she produced a staged reading of an adapted Shakespeare, Antony+Cleopatra REMIX.

JOHN LAHR (Dramaturg) John Lahr is the senior drama critic of The New Yorker, where he has written about theatre and popular culture since 1992. Among his eighteen books are Notes on a Cowardly Lion: The Biography of Bert Lahr and Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton, which was made into a film. He has twice won the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism. Lahr, whose stage adaptations have been performed around the world, received a Tony Award for co-writing Elaine Stritch at Liberty. He divides his time between London and New York.

EDWARD MATTHEW WALTER (Scene Designer) Matthew is honored to be making his Hancock Productions debut and extends his gratitude to John and everyone involved. After two seasons as the Resident Scene Design Assistant at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Matthew relocated to Chicago in November. Regional credits include Hold Please (Appetite Theatre), Eighteen (at the Gertrude Stein Rep Theatre in New York), Lend Me a Tenor and Travesties (Iowa Summer Rep), Fuddy Meers and The Goat (Riverside Theatre). JEFF PINES (Lighting Designer) is the resident lighting designer at Chicago Dramatists where he is designing A Steady Rain this fall. Jeff has worked with a variety of other Chicago theatre companies including Famous Door (Ghetto, Early & Often, Cider House Rules), Noble Fool, Victory Gardens, and Loop Players at Harold Washington College.

JOSEPH FOSCO (Sound Designer) Joseph is a Chicago-based sound designer and composer. Since 1996 he has been the Sound Designer for numerous A Red Orchid productions including Bug and The Cut. Some of his other Chicago design credits include The Vagina Monologues, The Bombity Of Errors, Pageant, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Cider House Rules. Joseph has been awarded a Jeff Award for Original Music, two Jeff Citations for Sound Design, and an After Dark Award for Sound Design. He has created music and sound for dance, film, and multimedia projects. He has a Bachelors of Music in Music Composition from DePaul University Chicago and a Masters of Music in Music Composition from the University of Miami in Florida.

DARCY HOFER (Costume Designer) A Michigan native, Darcy began her career as a theatre professional at the Purple Rose Theatre where she worked side by side with executive director Jeff Daniels in various roles. Since moving to Chicago she has designed for Appetite, Pine Box, Reverie, One Theatre, and Overdog Productions.

MARGARET CLIFFORD (Executive Producer/Office Manager) Margaret has been involved with FilmAcres for nine years. She graduated from Indiana University Bloomington and received a Bachelors Degree in Business. She earned her Masters degree in Education and received her Principal’s license. After 36 years in educational leadership, she retired. To keep busy in retirement she began working with Hancock Productions and thoroughly enjoys working with John and Dorothy. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Larry, two daughters and families with four grandchildren.

NANCY C. CHRIST (Accountant) Nancy graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and an Associates Degree in Management. She works independently only for small business. Happily married for 30 years, her two children are attending Purdue University. Nancy has worked with John and Dorothy Hancock since 1998 keeping everything financially in-line through two movies, his farm and now three plays. Through all the craziness, she is very proud to be friends with John and Dorothy and still holds the record for the biggest bass caught out of his pond!

STEPHANIE HUROVITZ (Stage Manager) is pleased to be working with all of these fine artists for the first time. She recently SM-ed Lifeline Theatre’s remount of Jeff citation recipient, Gaudy Night, at Theatre on the Lake. Other Lifeline credits include: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs: Giggle, Giggle, Quack, A Long Way From Chicago (original run and at Theatre on the Lake) and Deep In the Jungle. In 2006, she ASM-ed Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue with Rivendell and Teatro Vista Theatre Companies at the Steppenwolf Garage; before that, she stage managed The Coast of Chicago with Walk About Theatre Co. at Lookingglass; and prior to that, she SM-ed Casanova with Collaboraction. She has also stage managed for The International Theatre Co., Brown Couch, Reverie, Bailiwick and Pyewackett theatre companies.

BEN LASSER (Assistant Director) Ben Lasser is thrilled to be working with such a talented group of people. He's been working in Chicago for the past three years, directing and assistant directing with The Bailiwick, Stage Left, Speaking Ring, Three Card Monte, and Gorilla Tango Theater. Some of his favorite directing credits include Mud, Leonce and Lena, Geography of a Horse Dreamer, and Seduced. Ben looks forward to many more years without free time and money.

LEEANN ESPER (Prop Master) LeeAnn was the lead costumer at the Dunes Summer Theater for 10 years. She specializes in period costume design. A former preschool teacher, LeeAnn is a creative individual who loves working in interior design. She enjoys working with John Hancock and Dorothy Tristan on The Brother and ‘night, Mother. In her free time, LeeAnn spends time with her husband Mike and her three daughters.

ROBERT BLAKE (Technical Director) Robert's first experience began with his job as Greensman on A Piece of Eden. His passion for film and theatre continued with his work on Suspended Animation and Bohemian Nights. Robert has completed one short film and is in pre-production on another. He enjoys being a member of the crew of The Brother.

ELAINE RIVKIN* (Jessie) most recently appeared in Execution of Justice for About Face Theater and 365 Plays/365 Days at The Gift. As an ensemble member of Famous Door Theatre, she appeared in The Cider House Rules (Joseph Jefferson Awards for Best Ensemble, Best Production), Conquest of the South Pole (Joseph Jefferson Citations for Ensemble, Production), Salt of the Earth (Joseph Jefferson Citations for Ensemble, Production), The Homecoming (After Dark Award for Best Season), Hellcab, Beautiful Thing, Tiny Dimes, Smelling a Rat, Speaking in Tongues, Hushabye Mountain, Remembrance, Mann Ist Mann, Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs, Una Pooka, Little Murders, and others. DOROTHY TRISTAN (Thelma) appeared as Charlotte Corday in the first national tour of Marat/DeSade, played Blanche opposite Jon Voight in A Street Car Named Desire for which she won Best Actress Award, did Nora in A Doll’s House at Baltimore’s Center Stage, and Helena in Midsummer as well as Lady Macduff and Portia at Stratford, Connecticut. She was a member of Jerome Robbins Experimental Musical Company.
On film, she was Arlen Page in Klute with Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland, Scarecrow opposite Gene Hackman and Al Pacino, and the female lead in End Of The Road with Stacy Keach and James Earl Jones, Man On A Swing with Cliff Robertson and Joel Grey. She played supporting roles in California Dreaming, Swashbuckler, Rollercoaster, etc. She wrote the screenplays of A Piece Of Eden, Suspended Animation, Weeds, and Steal The Sky. Having left acting for writing, she was bitten by the acting bug again, and is delighted to be back on stage in Chicago.

Marsha Norman (author) received the 1991 Tony Award for the musical The Secret Garden. She is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of ‘night, Mother. For that play, she also received the Hull-Warriner Award and the Susan Smith Blackburn prize. Her first play, Getting Out, received the Gassner Medallion and the Newsday Oppenheimer Award. Other plays include Third And Oak, The Laundromat, The Pool Hall, Sarah And Abraham, and Loving Daniel Boone. She is currently represented on Broadway as a bookwriter and lyricist of The Red Shoes. She has also published a novel, The Fortuneteller, and written for film and television. She has received grants from the NEA, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Ms. Norman serves on the Council of the Dramatists Guild.

BECCA COREN (Assistant Stage Manager – ‘night, Mother) Becca graduated from American University and the British American Drama Academy before making her way to Chicago. Upon her arrival, she worked at Northwestern University's prestigious National High School Institute, teaching dance and theatre classes. Becca has been seen performing around town with Emerald City Theater Company, Ground Up Theater, HealthWorks Theater, and she recently finished playing the title role in Peter Pan with Alphabet Soup Productions. In the Fall, Becca will be performing at the Apple Tree Theatre, and Live Wire Theater Company in the Spring.

BEN LASSER (Assistant Director) Ben Lasser is thrilled to be working with such a talented group of people. He's been working in Chicago for the past three years, directing and assistant directing with The Bailiwick, Stage Left, Speaking Ring, Three Card Monte, and Gorilla Tango Theater. Some of his favorite directing credits include Mud, Leonce and Lena, Geography of a Horse Dreamer, and Seduced. Ben looks forward to many more years without free time and money.

LEEANN ESPER (Prop Master) LeeAnn was the lead costumer at the Dunes Summer Theater for 10 years. She specializes in period costume design. A former preschool teacher, LeeAnn is a creative individual who loves working in interior design. She enjoys working with John Hancock and Dorothy Tristan on The Brother and ‘night, Mother. In her free time, LeeAnn spends time with her husband Mike and her three daughters.

ROBERT BLAKE (Technical Director) Robert's first experience began with his job as Greensman on A Piece of Eden. His passion for film and theatre continued with his work on Suspended Animation and Bohemian Nights. Robert has completed one short film and is in pre-production on another. He enjoys being a member of the crew of The Brother.
